Day of Silence, Friday April 19th, 2013
The Argo Gay Straight Alliance will be participating in the Day of Silence next Friday, April 19th, 2013, to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Students in the GSA will be taking a vow of silence that day which they hope to extend to the classroom.
This day was designed as a peaceful way to protest the discrimination, harassment, and abuse faced by those who identify as and are perceived as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students and their allies in schools. This day, which is a project of GLSEN, was founded in 1996 and has become the largest single student-led action toward creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Please feel free to look at GLSEN's website for more information on the history of this day. You may also find more information at dayofsilence.org
Also, we are selling four different styles of buttons for $1 each and a limited number of L and XL T-shirts for $5 each. (See the picture attached. Some T-shirts say Argo GSA and some do not.) If you or someone you know is interested, see Ms. Haack in 146.
"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward building awarenes and making a commitment to address these injustices."
