Argo Sophomore Basketball Rallies for Relay for Life

On February 8th the Sophomore Boys Basketball Team donated $200 dollars to Oak Lawn’s Relay for Life basketball game. Each sophomore basketball player attempted to raise enough money to purchase purple socks, purple headbands, and purple warm-up shirts along with a sizeable donation. These accessories allowed them to be a part of the larger “paint” the gym purple event where all audience members wore purple and donated all proceeds of the concession stand, the ticket sales, t-shirt sales, and all donated raffle proceeds to Relay for Life. The ACHS Audio Visual Department supplied the team with a big check and the three captains for the game, (from left to right) Kentrell Howse – Justice, Ryan Borlongan – Justice, and Andres Miranda – Summit presented the sophomore captains from Oak Lawn a fictitious check complete with a signature from Jason the Argonaut, the ACHS Mythological Greek warrior mascot.

In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Ryan Naughton, the Argo Community High School Sophomore Basketball Coach, is very proud of his team, no matter what their record, their commitment to education outside the classroom and being prepared for global citizenry definitely has a winning record.
