Romeo and Juliet Valentines

Students wrote valentines to someone or something they care for in the language of Shakespeare. They are learning about love and the Shakespeare language as they read Romeo and Juliet in their Studies in Reading and Writing classes.

Argo Baseball for Misercordia

The Argo Community High School sophomore baseball team decided that they wanted to get involved with Misericordia’s annual Candy Days. Candy Days will be taking place the weekend of April 26th and 27th throughout the Chicagoland area.

More than 7500 volunteers will be collecting donations and issuing a small gift of Jelly Belly candy in return for any monetary contribution. For a week and a half the sophomore team gave up their lunch hour to collect donations in the cafeteria. Over that time the sophomore team was able to raise over $600 dollars.

The donations from Argo and the rest of the Candy Day fundraiser will support Misericordia’s residential, vocational, therapeutic, and recreational programs. Misericordia is a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. Misericordia also serves the families of these persons who want the best for them, yet cannot provide the services that they need. Misericordia is located on a 31-acre Chicago campus and currently serves more than 600 children and adults from diverse racial, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.

The sophomore baseball team hopes that if you see a Candy Day Volunteer on the road April 26th or 27th that you do your part and donate to a worthy cause.

Parents and Guardians Tdap

Attention Parents and Guardians

The State of Illinois has mandated that all students entering, advancing or transferring into grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 must submit proof of receipt of Tdap vaccine for the 2013-14 school year.  Students who do not comply are subject to exclusion from school.

This requirement is important because Pertussis (whooping cough) disease continues to occur throughout many Illinois communities. Vaccination of children and adolescents reduces illness and absenteeism among school age students. In addition Pertussis in infants can be fatal; a vaccinated community helps protect infants, especially those who are too young to be fully vaccinated.

If you have received a letter and immunization record from Health Services please contact your physician or health care provider to fulfill this requirement.

Free immunizations offered at: Cook County Dept. of Public Health - Bridgeview Court House: Call for appointment: 974-6160

You must submit written proof to Health Services in room 142 or fax it to 708-728-3216.

Questions/ Concerns feel free to call:
Pam Cooper RN 708-467-5647
or
Angela Sivak RN or 708-467-5648

Day of Silence

Day of Silence, Friday April 19th, 2013

The Argo Gay Straight Alliance will be participating in the Day of Silence next Friday, April 19th, 2013, to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Students in the GSA will be taking a vow of silence that day which they hope to extend to the classroom.

This day was designed as a peaceful way to protest the discrimination, harassment, and abuse faced by those who identify as and are perceived as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students and their allies in schools. This day, which is a project of GLSEN, was founded in 1996 and has become the largest single student-led action toward creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Please feel free to look at GLSEN's website for more information on the history of this day. You may also find more information at dayofsilence.org

Also, we are selling four different styles of buttons for $1 each and a limited number of L and XL T-shirts for $5 each. (See the picture attached. Some T-shirts say Argo GSA and some do not.) If you or someone you know is interested, see Ms. Haack in 146.

"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward building awarenes and making a commitment to address these injustices."

Save the Date: Letter for the Class of 1961

                                                                        655 16th Avenue NE
                                                                        St. Petersburg, FL 33704
                                                                        March 19, 2013

Dear 1961 ACHS Classmate:

SAVE THE DATE

Those of us who attended our 50th reunion celebration in 2011 (can it have been that long ago already?) were surprised at how many of us have relocated to Florida.

We joked then that we should have another reunion – Florida style – for those of us who now call this home.  We tried to get together last year, but couldn’t make it work.  But we were successful this year!   We had a small, but fun group that got together a few weeks ago in St. Petersburg.  Attending were Bob and Dorothy (Bercich) Rekar, Karol (Violetto) Frystak and her husband Jerry, Bob Mical and his wife Judy, Judy (Oakes) Lewis and her husband Ed, and me and my husband Ed.

We decided to try to make this an annual event and to hold it the first
Saturday of February, which next year will be February 1st.  We thought
that next year we would stay in a hotel and get together
at a restaurant in the Fort Myers area.

I got your address from the 50th reunion booklet that we received.  If you are interested in receiving more information about this get together, please send me your e-mail address or respond to the letter.  Also, please feel free to forward this letter, or my e-mail address to any other classmates that you know who might be traveling in Florida at that time of the year.  We would love to have as many of our former classmates as possible join us.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Kathy (DiBiase) Rawls
